How to Actually Wear Sunflower Earrings (Real Outfits, Not a Mood Board)

At some point along the way, floral earrings got filed under 'special occasion'. They were the kind of jewellery you might buy for a spring wedding, telling yourself you'll wear them all summer, before leaving them on top of the dresser for the next 4-6 months. It just seems such a waste of potential, because a handmade pair of sunflower earrings has way more range than people might think.

As much as i love a breezy sundress, paired with a picnic basket at golden hour, these are outfits I'd be much more likely to wear as I go about my day-to-day bits and pieces.

Monday to Friday

The case for wearing sunflower earrings to work is simple: a small, well-made pair of studs reads as considered but expressive. It's a subtle yet vocal burst of colour that adds a cheerful energy to your outfit.

Our handpainted sunflower studs are around 12mm tall, small enough to sit quietly against the earlobe but with enough detail to pull you in. They work with a blazer and tailored trousers, with a linen shirt tucked into a midi skirt, with basically any neutral that makes up the sensible half of a wardrobe. The handpainted detail gives them enough interest to invite the occasional 'oh, I love your earrings' without demanding attention.

Slow weekend mornings

This is actually where sunflower earrings thrive! That unhurried part of a Saturday morning when you're getting dressed 'cute but casual' without any particular agenda. Jeans and a neutral top, a linen dress you've had for three years, the denim jacket you wear when it's nicer out. Pop in the sunflower studs and the whole thing looks more intentional than it is.

If you've got nowhere in particular to be and want to add a little whimsy to a more laid back, simple outfit, this is also when the statement pair earns its place. Maybe wear your hair up or pushed back and stick to the classics - a sundress, or a knitted cardigan with blue jeans, and let the earrings have the morning. They're the perfect way to add something exciting to an otherwise dialled-down outfit, and there's something very satisfying about wearing accessories that make you feel more like yourself!

Days to remember

These are the events where the statement sunflower earrings really deliver. Birthday brunches, garden weddings, long, sunlit afternoons with your close friends... All of those occasions you know you'll remember. This is where a pair of sunflower earrings shines, making you look like you've made effort and adding a dose of cheerful energy to your look.

A midi dress in one of those beautifully rustic tones? In terracotta, dusty pink, olive green, those deep earthy shades, with the sunflower statement earrings and nothing else too complicated around the ears. Maybe a fine necklace and some rings, but nothing that overpowers the sunflowers. Then the earrings become the focus and the dress supports them. It's classic and it always works!

If you want a bit more cohesion, pairing any of the sunflower earrings with an outfit in a warmer golden tone gives you a collected, considered look without crossing into matchy-matchy territory, and you get a whole world of textures, prints and materials to play with within a complementary colour palette!

Out and about

Those Sundays that end up being longer than you thought, when a quick afternoon catch up turns into an evening full of belly laughs. Or when grabbing coffee at the farmers market ends up being small plates and old stories while the sun sets. I love how these types of moments that were never really planned for usually end up being some of the most memorable!

Handmade polymer clay earrings are ideal for days like this: they're lightweight, they don't snag on your clothes or drag your earlobes down, and there's nothing precious about wearing them somewhere dusty or outdoors - any small marks can just be wiped off. A pair of sunflower stud earrings in your ears, a pair of shoes that can handle the twists and turns of a day out, and you're done!

The golden rule

When you think of sunflower yellow, you think warm and cosy, not pale or pastel. It's much more golden, so it sits very happily with other warm, earthy tones. Some of my favourites - rust, tan, olive, cream, olive green, even a deep muted teal all go beautifully. While you might think the sunflowers look slightly less at home next to a cooler, less saturated palette - more greys, bluer tones and whites - silver findings do a wonderful job of bridging the gap and balancing the overall colours in your outfit!

And if you're still thinking it through, there's more on styling nature-inspired pieces and what makes sunflowers such a good jewellery muse over in this post:

What Is It About Sunflowers?

A flower for the ages

There's so many reasons while people always come back to floral jewellery over the decades and across trends. There's something almost intrinsic about wearing an ode to nature on you - especially when it's something small and handmade - that has this sense of timelessness about it. It just makes you feel a little bit more connected to the world as you move through modern day life, and in such a small daily way that makes it feel special.
