Caring For Your Sterling Silver Jewellery

When you buy a pair of new sterling silver earrings, you'll want to make sure you can keep them looking shiny and new for as long as possible. Although it is seen as a more luxurious metal, 925 sterling silver does require a little bit of love and care to keep it in its best shape! Here are a few of our favourite tips to make sure your sterling silver jewellery stays looking brand new:

  1. Jewellery storage is key!
Your sterling silver earrings are sensitive to the environment around it, so when you're not wearing your jewellery it's best to keep them in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. All Arias Design Co earrings are sent out to you in a cotton blend jewellery pouch, which is ideal to protect your favourite earrings from any dust and humidity. Alternatively, a bag or box is a great option!

  2. Avoid contact with chemicals
It can be difficult to know which of your lotions, perfumes and hairsprays will react with your sterling silver jewellery so as a rule of thumb we recommend playing it safe and avoiding contact with cosmetics as often as possible. This looks like putting on your jewellery after any cosmetic products have dried - think of it as the finishing touch!

  3. Keep it clean:
Dirt or oils from your skin can easily transfer on to your sterling silver earrings and can eventually lead to tarnishing, so it's important to keep your jewellery clean. You can use a polishing cloth, or even a soft toothbrush and gentle soap. While you don't need to do this every day, it's always a good shout to clean up every once in a while. This also helps stop any bacteria developing on the transferred oils, which can in turn irritate your skin.

  4. Avoid wearing your jewellery in water: Sterling silver is durable but can still be damaged by water, so it's best to remove your jewellery before swimming, bathing, or showering. Moisture can cause tarnishing, and chlorine or saltwater can corrode the metal, leading to discoloration or damage. I learnt this the hard way when I wore my sterling silver rings in some of Rotorua's hot springs and they all turned black after reacting with the sulphur in the mineral water!

  5. Store your jewellery separately: To prevent scratches or tangling, store each piece of jewelry separately. Consider using a jewelry box or pouch to keep your jewelry organized and protected.
